What is Neroli?

 

 

The neroli oil we incorporate into our products comes with a seductive history. Neroli oil is an essential oil (citrus aurantium) from the Bitter Orange tree.  It is produced from the beautiful and fragrant white blossoms by steam distillation.  It takes 100 kg (220 lbs) of orange blossoms to yield only 80 grams or just under 3 ounces of neroli oil, making it one of the most expensive essential oils available. It is liquid gold. The oils extracted from the Bitter Orange trees have been used for centuries from Asia to Africa.  The orange blossom was a symbol of abundance and fertility. Young Persian and Arab brides were adorned by crowns of the blossoms heady with the scent of orange; refreshing, sensual, and evocative.  Imagine wearing a crown of orange blossoms!

 

 

History of Neroli

 

 

Close your eyes and envision a small ancient town outside of Rome in 17th century Italy: Nerola.  Anne Marie de la Tremoille who later in life becomes the Princess of Nerola is known to have created the heady perfume derived from the orange blossoms.  She gathered baskets of the blossoms from the groves surrounding her property and brought them to a local distiller who produced the fragrant orange water to perfume her bath and her gloves. Princess Nerola was the “it-girl” among the royal courts of France, Spain, and Italy and one can only imagine the heads she turned walking through castle halls with the potent bouquet of orange blossom following her.  The fragrance became well known among the courts of  Europe and was later known as Neroli oil, after our Princess. This liquid gold rapidly rose to popularity and was produced in perfumeries worldwide.  Soon after its discovery, neroli oil became the star ingredient for making eau de cologne; one of the most sought after perfumes of the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
